Video 1

The tracks shown in this animation represent three years of data from three shark species: salmon, blue and mako sharks. Each 'worm' represents one week of data from a single shark. The shifting color zones indicate the sea surface temperature as it changes through the seasons.
The salmon sharks, which were all tagged in Prince William Sound, Alaska, travel from the very cold waters (blue areas) to the warmer subtrobpical waters (orange and red areas). Mako sharks use a smaller temperature range, and blue sharks tend to remain in warmer waters.
